With his parents in prison, Freddy Freeman came into the care of the Vasquez family, where he met his foster brother Billy Batson. After the wizard Shazam granted super-powers to Billy by choosing him as Champion, Freddy helped him come to terms with them and use them for good as the hero Shazam. But when Freddy and his other siblings were in mortal danger, Billy decided to share his powers with them, transforming Freddy into Freddy Shazam!
