When Abin Sur crashed on Earth, his Power Ring found two suitable candidates for the Green Lantern mantle, Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Unbeknownst to Guy, the ring chose Hal only because he was closer. He finally had the chance to prove his worth as a Lantern while Hal recruited new candidates for the Corps. During this time, he helped create the Justice League International, developing a resentful relationship with their leader, Batman.
